1. WHERE and WHEN Do You Leave Your Trip?

Our trip disbands at the end of the morning on Saturday, after a cycle to the town of Mouchard.  The cycle can be long or short, as desired:  the straight-line distance is only 15 k, though a hill is in the way.  And you can skip the whole business if you prefer a relaxing morning in Arbois (where you will have spent the previous night).  Full disclosure:  you would still have to cycle to the Arbois station, 4 k from our hotel.

If you wish to arrange your own ongoing travel (in other words, you do not want to set up any ongoing travel arrangements through us), a couple of hints regarding ongoing travel are offered at the bottom of this page. Otherwise...

as of March 31, 2012

The closest intercontinental airports are Paris, Geneva in Zurich, all approximately equidistant.  Any can be reached in time for an evening flight (post 8p).  Trans-Atlantic flights depart earlier, so a night en route will be necessary, for a Sunday flight.

Base (Starting) Access Package Price:  56€.
To see what this means in your currency, look here:   http://www.bluemarble.org/CurrencyConv.html

Availabilityis not guaranteed.  This discount fare is capacity-controlled, and may not be available on all trains, with availability decreasing as date of travel approaches.  A 79€ fare will reliably be available until a week before travel.  Children under 12 qualify for a reduced fare of 40€.

  • Rail tickets to Paris, Geneva (downtown or airport) or Zurich (downtown or airport).
Tickets are not refundable or exchangeable once ordered (see below for extra cost first class and / or flexible tickets).
Luggage Transfer to Paris is available if you wish to travel light for this trip (which involves two connections).  See below for details.
  • Seat reservations on trains which require them.
  • A printed schedule / itinerary, highlighting any connections.
  • All taxes, booking or agency charges, baggage charges.

Options Offered at an Extra Cost (subject to availability)
Prices are in addition to the “Base” Access Package Price.
For a general discussion of train upgrades, see here.  Topics include the relative comfort of first versus second class, and different types of accommodation available on overnight trains.

  • Tickets to London.  Add 79€ euros if you are also purchasing tickets from London at the start of your trip, 109€ euros if not, or if you prefer a changeable ticket (in 1st cl., add 119€ euros or 145€ euros; 1st class tickets include meal service).
  • Tickets to Milan:  +10€.
  • Tickets to Frankfurt:  +28€.
  • Luggage Transfer to Paris:  12€ / piece, to our Paris office.
Baggage is collected from the Arbois hotel in the morning.  We will also arrange pick-ups at the railway stations where cycling ends (Arbois or Mouchard) for bikes and / or tandems.  Minimum of 2 pieces required per alternate Paris destination:  to a Paris hotel, for instance.  Transfer to an airport hotel is available:  cost is 42€ for the first piece, 12€ per additional piece.
A bicycle counts as one piece of luggage, tandems count as two.  If time permits, it will be cheaper to pack your tandem at whichever station you ride to before giving it to us for shipment, as you must otherwise pay to ship both the tandem and the empty cases.
Delivery time is subject to traffic conditions, but should logically be around 7p.
Weight limit for shipped pieces is 22 kilos / 50 lbs.  Overweight pieces cost +50%.

  • First class train tickets (in lieu of 2nd class):   +16€ to Paris (+9€ / child under 12), +24€ to Zurich or Geneva, +32€ to Milan, +44€ to Frankfurt.
  • Flexible (modifiable) tickets.  +23€ to Paris, Geneva, or Zurich.  +32€ to Milan or Frankfurt.
These tickets are exchangeable at any station, on a space-available basis, at any time until the train’s departure, for free if the exchange is made prior to the date of travel, or for 10€ on the date of travel.  Cost of the exchange is 10€ if you make it through us, as opposed to standing in line at the station yourself (but we know some tricks to get on trains that are supposedly “sold out”).  Tickets are refundable less 20%, provided they are turned in at a station before the train’s departure.
  • Paris Hotel Bookings.  For bookings at our usual Paris hotel, see here.  Family rooms available.
  • Tickets on the Paris airport train, to Charles de Gaulle or Orly from anywhere in the city.  Follow this link for details.

3. TIMING Your Trip

The “end-of-morning” trip time is designed to roughly correspond to train departures towards any of our recommended destinations.  If your desire is to simply finish the trip as we have planned for you to do, and then to travel to an airport city, you may tell us that, and we will know what to do.

There is one option that might tempt you to stay in the region longer, however, only compatible with ongoing travel to Paris.  The regional capital, Besançon, is a beautiful and interesting city, 30 minutes from Mouchard (or 40 minutes from Arbois) by train.  If you would like to go there for an afternoon visit, and continue to Paris on an end-of-afternoon train, you may do so.  There is no extra cost to this, except that you will need to avail yourself of our luggage transfer service, as there is no place to store bags at the Besançon station.

4. Service Information
Schedules are approximate – exact timetables can be consulted at
Best trains are mentioned. Others are slower or have multiple connections.

  • To Paris.  Trains leave Arbois or Mouchard at 11:30a.  Journey time to Paris is ±4 hours.
2012 note:   a major trackwork project in Dijon, though which Paris trains must pass, will affect schedules for Paris-bound trains on our travel weekend.  Back-up schedules on an alternate route depart Mouchard or Arbois at 1p, and arrive Paris at 5:50p.  If you have ordered tickets for a midday service, and the service is cancelled, we will substitute for this back-up at no additional charge, but without prior consultation.
  • To Paris via Besançon (for a stop in Besançon):  depart Arbois or Mouchard at 9:30a or 11:30a, Mouchard only at 12:20p, arrive Besançon 30 minutes later (the schedule of your trip as far as Besançon can be decided on the travel day:  tickets are good on all trains).  Continue from Besançon to Paris at 5:30p, arrive 8:30p.
  • To Geneva.  Depart Arbois 11:30a, Mouchard 12:20p.  Arrive Geneva 5p.
  • To Zurich.  Depart Arbois or Mouchard 11:30a, arrive Zurich 5p.  Or, depart 1p, arrive 6p.
  • To London.   Add 3.5 hours to Paris times.

We really like Besançon, if you feel like a night in a pleasant French provincial city.

Guests subscribing to an “Access Package” need not read this section.

See also “Timing Your Trip” and “Service Information,” above, as either of these may additionally help.

We gladly provide travel consulting (schedule or routing information) concerning post-trip individual travel.  In particular, we have invested a great deal to become railway experts.  Our service fees are reasonable:  a 20 euro charge for all but the most complex projects – or the most simple (for instance, only a 10 euro charge applies if the service is limited to the preparation of a routine rail ticket).  You will generally find them well-justified by the time they will save you in research, standing on line, overpaying for your tickets, or all three.

But, for some, this type of research is fun.  So, here are some hints, intended to start off hardened “do-it-yourselfers.”

Trains.  Schedules for all routes can be consulted on this web site:

Mouchard is a junction station, with lines heading north, south, east and west.  It is not a big place, however, and service is sparse.  Most relevant trains are listed above.

Planes.  The nearest airport city, about 2 hours away, is Basel / Mulhouse (BSL MLH EAP — the multiple codes reflect the tri-national nature of the airport).  Basel / Mulhouse has only intra-Europe flights, however. Lyon (also intra-Europe flights) is only slightly farther.

After that, Paris, Zurich, and Geneva are all about equidistant, in the 4 - 5 hour range.

If you wish to arrange some or all of your travel through us, please tell us what by means of this response questionnaire, designed to collect all the information we need to be able to book your travel.
