C’est Cheese 2 weeks
France (Burgundy, the Jura and Savoie) & Switzerland
On this page, you will find...
There is no better view of Europe’s astonishingly compact diversity than this ride. Burgundy, the Jura, the Savoie and French Switzerland, all of which you will visit, share borders and language, and once shared government. But they differ in scenery, cuisine, social order, and just about everything else. A closely-knit trip that leaves you feeling like you crossed a continent....

The trip title’s cheese hommage is justified by Epoisse, Langres, Ami de Chambertin... Gruyère, Compté, Bleu de Gex, Fribourg, Vacherin du Mont d’Or, Morbier, Reblochon, Tomme de Savoie... and a host of others, all made along our route. Served on post-dinner cheese trays, in sauces over steaks, in pots with white wine and kirsch (the famous fondue), scraped melted onto potatos with cured beef from the high Alps (raclette), with melted with fresh cream and onions (tartiflette), and accompanied by some of Europe’s most charming and diverse wines.
We finish with a couple of days in German Switzerland, in the beautiful Alpine resort of Zermatt. And our post-trip “Access Package” offers a fun night over the border in Italy. Where you will discover that the Italian town of Domodossola, where you stay, has as much to do with where you have been as it does with the country to which it is now attached....

Trip disbands Sunday, upon arrival in Brig.
Sunday night in Italy is included in the post-trip Brig Access Package, to get you in place for ongoing travel on Monday.
It is possible to get a Sunday afternoon flight from Geneva, Zurich, or Milano Malpensa. Or to catch the last train to London. But don’t do this unless you have to, as it puts unpleasant pressure on the day on Sunday. The last train to Paris is easy to catch, however. |
